Best Short International Trips From India (Under a Week)

Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Bali, Maldives, Phu Quoc or Malaysia — how to pick the right 3 to 5 night overseas escape from India

Best Short International Trips From India (Under a Week)

You have five or six days, not a fortnight. That single fact changes everything about an overseas holiday. A short international trip from India lives or dies on four things: how easily your passport gets you in, how long the flight is, what it all costs once flights and visa are added, and who's coming. Get those four right and a three- or four-night escape feels like a proper holiday rather than a rushed airport dash.

We plan these short hops constantly, so here's the honest framing. Visa ease matters most when time is tight — a visa-on-arrival or eVisa country beats one that wants a fortnight of paperwork. Flight time decides how much of day one survives. And the right destination for honeymooners is the wrong one for a family with restless ten-year-olds.

One standing caveat for everything below: international flights are almost always extra, and visa rules for Indian passport holders change often. Treat these notes as general guidance and check current rules before booking.

Dubai — the easiest first-time short break

Dubai is the path of least resistance. Flights from most Indian metros are three to four hours, the UAE tourist visa is straightforward, and the city packs a lot into little time. Our Dubai Dreams short break runs three nights: a Marina dhow cruise the first evening, a half-day city tour and the Burj Khalifa deck on day two, then the 4×4 desert safari with dune bashing and a BBQ dinner.

Best season is November to March, when the daytime heat is bearable and the desert evening is pleasant; outside that window it is simply hot. Our Dubai travel guide goes deeper on neighbourhoods, the souks and getting around.

Choose this if it's your first trip abroad and you like your holidays a little glossy.

Singapore — the family-friendly city pick

Singapore is clean, compact and built for visitors who don't want to think too hard. English is everywhere, the transport is faultless and the attractions are clustered. Our Singapore Spark escape is three nights from Chennai: Gardens by the Bay and the Marina Bay skyline, a Sentosa day, then Universal Studios and the Night Safari — the world's first nocturnal wildlife park.

It runs well year-round, though brief afternoon downpours are common, and the Singapore tourist visa needs arranging in advance. Read our Singapore travel guide for hawker-centre tips and pacing the theme-park days.

Choose this if you're travelling with children or want a city break where everything just works.

Thailand — the most for your money

Thailand is the workhorse of short-haul holidays from India: flights are short, the food is brilliant, and the value is hard to beat. Our Thai Bliss Escape splits three nights between Pattaya and Bangkok — a Coral Island speedboat day, the Alcazar Cabaret Show, Nong Nooch garden, a Chao Phraya dinner cruise and a Bangkok temple tour, with Indian meals throughout.

November to February is the sweet spot — drier and cooler. Thailand is generally simple for Indian passport holders on a short visit; confirm the current arrangement first. Our Bangkok and Pattaya guide covers the markets, temples and what to skip.

Choose this if you want maximum experience for the money and don't mind a busy itinerary.

Bali — the one that needs a fifth night

Bali is the outlier here because it genuinely rewards more time. It's spread out, the magic is in the temples and rice terraces, and rushing it is a mistake. Our Bali Bliss escape is therefore four nights: Kintamani volcano views and a coffee plantation, Benoa Beach water sports, the cliff-top Uluwatu temple at sunset, and the lakeside Ulun Danu Beratan and sea-set Tanah Lot temple.

Aim for April to October, Bali's drier season. Indonesia offers visa-on-arrival for Indian travellers, which keeps the admin light. Skim our Bali travel guide for which beaches suit which crowd.

Choose this if you can spare four or five nights and want temples and scenery over city lights.

Maldives — the short honeymoon

The Maldives does one thing better than anywhere: switching off. Three nights on a single island is plenty — the point is to stay put. Our Maldives Luxe Escape puts you in a beach or overwater villa with a speedboat or seaplane transfer, snorkelling and a coral reef, a sunset dolphin cruise, a private sandbank picnic and a beachside candlelight dinner.

The dry season runs roughly December to April. It's straightforward for Indian passport holders, with a free visa-on-arrival — though the resort, not the visa, is where your budget goes. Our Maldives honeymoon guide explains how to choose between a beach and an overwater villa.

Choose this if you're honeymooning, celebrating, or simply need to do nothing beautifully.

The best short trip isn't the one that fits the most in — it's the one where day one survives the journey and day four still feels like a holiday.

Phu Quoc — the quieter island

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's beach island and the most under-the-radar entry here — a tropical break without the crowds of the obvious names. Our Phu Quoc Escape runs three nights: the European-styled Grand World by night, the VinWonders theme park, and a four-island speedboat tour with snorkelling at Gam Ghi and a beach lunch on May Rut, plus the Hon Thom cable car and Aquatopia water park.

November to April is driest. Vietnam uses an eVisa for Indian travellers, so apply online before you fly — and check the routing, as flights usually connect through Ho Chi Minh City. Our Phu Quoc travel guide has the island-hopping detail.

Choose this if you want islands and theme-park fun together, and prefer somewhere less obvious.

Malaysia — the variety pick

Malaysia squeezes a city, a cool hill station and a theme park into one trip, which makes it a strong all-rounder for mixed groups. Our Marvellous Malaysia Escape is four nights from Kuala Lumpur: Putrajaya and a KL night tour, the Petronas Towers and Batu Caves, the Genting Highlands cable car and a full day at Sunway Lagoon.

It's a year-round destination, with occasional short, heavy showers. Malaysia is generally accommodating for Indian passport holders on short visits — verify the current entry requirement first. Our Malaysia travel guide covers routes and where to base yourself.

Choose this if you're a mixed-age group and want city, highlands and rides in one go.

So which one?

First time abroad? Dubai or Singapore. Most for your rupee? Thailand. Honeymooning? Maldives, no contest. A mixed-age crowd? Malaysia or Singapore. And if you can find a fifth night, Bali and Phu Quoc reward it. Whichever you pick, the two reminders worth repeating: international flights sit outside the land package on every one of these, and visa rules shift — so price the flight and check the current visa before you book. Get those sorted, and a few nights away really can feel like a fortnight.
